No More Porn: If Looking at Porn is Wrong…

There has been a lot of talk recently about whether or not people are “addicted’ to porn. I’ve been back and forth on this issue here. My current belief is it can be an addiction, but this is the case for only a slim minority of those who say they want to stop but can’t. I’m not going to spend any more time on that because Porn Addiction or Bad Habit? The Difference Matters!, a guest post on to Love Honor and Vacuum did a brilliant job of saying pretty much what I think.

No More Porn: If Looking at Porn is Wrong...

Regardless of is one is addicted to porn or has a bad porn habit, looking at porn is wrong. Or it’s sin, if you want to get all biblical about it. But we don’t treat porn use like most sins. We try to ignore the fact that a majority of Christian men and about a third of Christian women view porn regularly. Porn is the don’t ask, don’t tell of the church! Even worse, it’s okay as long as you are “struggling with it.” Some have been struggling for a decade or more with little indication they are approaching victory.

What other sin gets this kind of a pass? What other SEX SIN gets this kind of a pass? If I could convince you a majority of men and a third of women in your church were engaging in threesomes at least once a month would you be okay with that? Would you accept it as easily as you do the statistics about porn use? Would you feel it was okay if most of those couples said they were working on it? What if some had been working on it for many years and were still doing it 90% as much as when they first tried to stop?

I suppose my real question here is this:

Is porn bigger than God?

Is porn the one sin we just can’t avoid? Does God’s power to change us and make us increasingly holy fail when it comes to porn use? Has God called us to go easy on porn because He can’t help people with this sin?

Several times over the last few years I suggested men could be free of porn use in a short period of time. Every time I’ve done that I’ve had comments and/or emails telling me it will take some men years to accomplish this goal. I find that to be at odds with what the Bible says. In 1 Corinthians 10:13 Paul tells us that God will not let you us tempted beyond our ability and that with every temptation He will provide a way of escape. I assume this includes the very strong temptation to look at porn.

My rant here is not intended to shame anyone or make them feel horrible about their sin. My intention is to show that most of us have believed a lie about the power of porn versus the power of God. I think this lie is why so many men can’t get free of porn. Deal with the lie, and dealing with the sin becomes possible in Him.
